The problem with halls of fame, as I see it, is the popularity of the sport or music or whatever category the "celebrity" comes from at any particular time. Jeff Burton, Carl Edwards and Neil Bonnet certainly were popular names at their time, but did they do anything really memorable? Dale Jr winning most popular driver 15 times IS memorable.
Many of those nominated deserve name recognition, but what exactly did they contribute to the sport that is especially noteworthy? Several of them I've never heard of, and I am a long-time na$car fan. Perhaps because of my isolation in Wyoming where racing was barely sometimes covered in sports news, therefore I never heard of those folks. I don't know.
Halls of fame sometimes seem willing to give "participation trophies" to just about everyone. It's like they're in a hurry to fill the halls with recognized people. My fire dept has the "Walk of Fame" award. The person selected gets their picture and a brief write-up of why they got the award displayed in the main building of the training center. Not every year is a person chosen. It's just when someone really stands out as having contributed significantly that they get nominated, and then get voted on by the dept officers.
Na$car every year selects nominees for their HOF. This year it seems to me that they're getting kinda close to the bottom of the barrel, but not scraping it yet. In my opinion, some of those nominated this year likely deserve it, but some of the others don't.
