Every year we have individuals that complain about the hours of darkness. The numbers geek in me has calculated the time between sunrise to sunset.
12 hours 09 minutes Quito Ecuadore
11 hours 19 minutes Bangkok, TH
10 hours 50 minutes Honolulu, HI
9 hours 56 minutes Pheonix, AZ 9 hours 28 minutes Montrose, CO 8 hours 59 minutes Flint, MI
8 hours 58 minutes Dover, DE
8 hours 51 minutes Gillette, WY
8 hours 36 minutes Richland, WA 8 hours 32 minutes Caribou, ME 4 hours 12 minutes Keflavik, IS
0 hours 00 minutes Utquiagvik, AK (formerly known as Barrow, AK)
By moving to Montrose in the winter, Fire21 has added an extra 37 minutes of daylight.

That's very interesting! I'd never considered how the amount of daylight varies by location. You're a whiz with numbers!!
I just KNEW there had to be some good in this annual back and forth!

That's cuz you're in a geographical conundrum. You are considered almost a part of Dixie (the south), but you're well north of what is now defined as the south. Heck, y'all are just Yankees in sheep's clothing!!

See I told you we get less light than you west coasters ! Nothing to do with east/west coast. It is north/south.

We are neither north or south, we are Mid Atlantic. The sun rises in the east (that's me) and sets in the west. East Coast loses it before the west coast does. In the Civil War we in SOMD(Charles, Calvert and St Mary's Counties) seceded with the south. While the rest of MD went with the north. We have always been in limbo as to whether we are northern or southern. Lol

Compared to us, you are south.
45.00o N is halfway between the equator and the north pole.
It is related to the the latitude. The angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator usually expressed in degrees and minutes. Two places on the same latitude but on the east and west coasts would have the same length of days. The days would just start at different times.
71.2906° N latitude of Utquiagvik, AK 46.2856o N latitude of my house
46.2804° N latitude of Richland, WA 46.2471° N latitude of Hamilton, MT
44.2911° N latitude of Gillettee, WY 39.1582° N latitude of Dover, DE
38.4422° N latitude of Mechanicsville, MD 38.4783° N latitude of Montrose, CO 00.1807° S latitude of Quito Ecuadore

That's cool! I had no idea that Mechanicsville and Montrose we so close, global-position wise.
And altitude isn't the only other factor that affects weather. There's ocean currents, humidity, ground cover, air currents, the jet stream, and others.

So do you now want me to check out the altitude of each location? We already know that Montrose and Gillette are both quite a bit higher than the rest.
OK here it is.

4554 Gillette, WY
522 my house
387 Richland, WA
157 Mechanicsville, MD 43 Greenwood, DE

Boy Ilene, I mentioned altitude and you just grabbed that bait and ran with it! LOL!! It is interesting to compare places the way you have these last few days. Thanks!

Yup I'm at the bottom of the barrel! Lol! We have so many different topographical features here, which is why our weather is so unpredictable. We have the mountains, foothills, beach, many many rivers. Especially in my area we have 3 rivers that majorly affect our weather. The Potimac, Wicomico and Patuxent, not to mention the Chesapeake Bay. Alot of storms follow or are diverted by the 3 rivers. There is a saying, if you domt like the weather wait a minute it will change!
