We just got back today from a week’s vacation. We went with friends to the International Peace Garden on the Canadian border, about halfway across North Dakota. On the way we camped Monday night at the northern end of Teddy Roosevelt National Park in western ND…gorgeous place. It has erosion formations kinda similar to Grand Canyon, but not as large nor as colorful. Herds of bison, deer, antelope, and LOTS of prairie dogs roam throughout the Park. The Little Missouri River is the source of the erosion, along with wind, rain, and snow melt.
The Peace Garden is exactly that, a 2500-acre (I think) flower garden of incredible beauty! It’s interesting that it is neither in the US nor Canada…it is it’s own little area independent of either country. Once inside, you need your passport to get back into either country! It has huge areas of flowers and fountains…lots of running water with its peaceful sounds. We camped inside the Garden grounds Tue. and Wed. I need to add that the entire Garden isn't flowers...most of it is a forested nature preserve with a peaceful road wandering through it.
Thur. we drove to Medora, ND, which is a tiny town along I-94 in western ND. The townsfolk have made it a tourist trap, with southern Roosevelt Park as only one of the attractions. They have a huge steak dinner that they serve in the evenings, and then there is a musical show that they put on at night, featuring singing and dancing talent from across the country. No big-name people, mainly young folks displaying their talents. The dinner and shows are done during the summer. There were hundreds attending both events Friday night.
Today it was about a 6-hour drive to get home from there. Got the RV trailer parked and unloaded and we are just relaxing tonight. Tomorrow we go back to the daily grind of retirement!
