Since we all live in different parts of the country, I'm wondering what you have observed and how you feel about so-called climate change?
I remember a lot more difficult winters when I was a boy. We had more snow as I recall, but then, I was shorter, so a snow drift might have SEEMED larger compared to how I see them today. I do know that our winters of the last 10-15 years are milder than they used to be. We had some severely cold Decembers in the early 1980s, whereas every year now we question if we'll have a white or brown Christmas. The forecast for this December and winter is quite mild with little snow.
I haven't seen any major differences in summers. I don't recall actually suffering through summers as a kid, I guess because I was so busy being a kid. I do know that every year Mom signed me up for swimming lessons, but the water was so cold my lips would turn blue and I'd have to drop out...never did learn to swim properly. Nowadays summers vary year to year. This past summer is the first one I can remember that we did not hit triple digit temps.
Do my observations support claims of global warming? Not in my mind, they don't. I do believe in climate change. Climate has changed everywhere in the world over the eons, going from ice ages to sweltering droughts.
Does mankind's use of fossil fuels affect things? I don't really have an answer to that. My OPINION is that yes it does, but I don't know how much. I think of the age of industrialization and all the smoke and garbage that was poured into the air. But that was only in developing countries. WWII saw the atmosphere absorb pollutants from bombs, fires, rifle shots, poorly running field equipment and so on...but that was limited to Europe and north Africa.
Now we have pollution coming from virtually every country in the world. China and India are major contributors, whereas previously they had few power plants and factories. The Amazon forest is being destroyed, and America's forests are burning more severely, so replenishment of the oxygen and consumption of carbon dioxide is less. There seems to be more volcanic activity, but that might just be better and more media coverage.
I certainly don't agree with Pres. Obama that climate change is more critical than ISIS. But I don't know where it does fit into the priority ladder. Maybe it IS more critical, just not as timely.
Tell us what you think.......
