Well, it's certainly spring now! We had mostly sunny and 65 on Sunday, spent much of the afternoon outside. Yesterday was 71 and today is to be 77. Friday is a low chance of some rain.
I'm gonna have to get the air cooler going if this continues...the house these afternoons is getting very warm!
Yes, I know, here I am whining about the heat already.

One year ago today we had 2.2 inches of snow. It was the first time since the 1930s that there had been any measurable snow this late in the season. Today it got up to 57o with scattered rain. Much more normal weather for April.

Had a real spring day on Thursday...had rain, hail, snow, wind and sun. Been a bit cool, but now we warm up for a few days, then cool to the 50s for a few more. Birds are building nests and trees are popping tiny leaves.

Got up to 82o today. I am not ready for the heat. Not much wind today so was able to work on trimming some shrubs.

Another day in the 80s, but at least the humidity was 15-20%. Forecast is 90o on Sunday. Too early in the season for this heat.

The Border Patrol up on the Canadian border is doing a very poor job of preventing the migrating wildfire smoke from settling over most of Washington. The smoke has rushed the border and headed south. We are not allowed to sent the smoke back to its home country. The sun is trying to shine but can't be seen. Add to that, temperatures in the mid 90os....guess it is just part of summer.

We're basking in the 70s. Been that way for a week or so, will continue for another week, then we might see some low 80s. We've gotten clouds most afternoons, but no moisture to speak of here in town. Storms form to the W and SW, but then usually split and go around Montrose.

Well, as we move towards the 80s, I decided it was time to get our evaporative cooler ready to go. Naturally a rust hole showed up in the reservoir! This cooler is old, like our shingles were, so deterioration is expected.
I researched new coolers this morning and found they cost from around $600 to $2500...and most come WITHOUT a motor!! How stupid is that? And some come WITHOUT the float valve (shuts off the water when the tank is full). What they're selling is a metal box with a motorless fan in it, and ripping us off in the process! Then add installation!!
I'm not allowed on the roof anymore, so my grandson is doing the work for us. We're gonna try to clean up the rusty spot and apply some JB Weld to see if it'll seal it. At replacement costs, it's definitely worth the effort to stretch the life of our present cooler as far as we can!

96o, 16% humidity, wind 17 mph gusts to 50 mph. Extreme fire warning. Canadian smoke coming in. Looks like a wild fire in the vineyards coming toward us over the mountain. Need to keep an eye on that, less than a mile away. Don't know if the sun is out or not. Have the air filters running in the house so I can breath. Just another summer day.
Four hours later: The fire is now on our side of the mountain. The smell is much stronger. I will not be going to bed until it is under control.
Two more hours, Just came back from a short drive. This evening our winds have been 20-30 mph. It looks like there were three or four fires. The closest on the south side of Red Mountain looks like it ran the length of the mountain and around the west side toward all the housing just west from me. They just about have it out before getting to the housing. Looks like there was another, maybe sparks from the mountain, that was along the river at the base of the mountain. The sheriff's department has the main road along the river blocked off.
On the hills on the other side of the river there is crop land and a lot of open wild land. It looks like it circled the large potato field up on the hill. To the west of that and above a housing area is another fire. That is where all the fire equipment is. All I could see of that was the fire and the warning lights on the trucks.
This is all within five miles of my house. Since the fires on this side of the river are out I can now go to bed. If possible I hope they can let more of the wild land burn since it is near Interstate 82 and we have a few small fires every year along the highway.
Until this evening it was a boring day. Back in 2000 we had a fire and they came by and told all of us to prepare to evacuate. Until around 0200 all of us in the neighborhood had our trucks packed and we stood out in the street listening to the radio and watching the flames. It did jump the river but they kept it down to 10 acres on this side. That was the fire that took out 200,000 acres. Hope to never go through that again.
and on the other side of the river.
another fire on the east side of the Tri-Cities

Nice day. Not much smoke, we can see the sky. Temperature only got up to 80o with winds less than 10 mph. Didn't need to run the air conditioner but keeping the air filters going.
Two days after the fires the crew are still out mopping up hot spots. They say there were 43 fire engines, 5 water tenders and 226 firefighters. Met one of the crews from out of town at the convenience store this morning picking up snacks. Thanked them for their efforts.

Glad things have settled down. I read somewhere that one home had been lost...any further word?
It promises to be a heck of a summer!!
After today and tomorrow we go to some mid to upper 80s, and then lower to mid 90s. Not looking forward to those!

This morning it got down to 47o. The high was 71o. A real change. It will be back to the 80s by mid week and the 90s next week.
Another big fire about 50 miles to the east near Walla Walla. Last I heard it was "several thousand acres." Last week they were here helping us with our fires now we are helping them. Units clear out to Yakima have responded. The State Mobilization Plan is responding. Sounds like it started in some wheat fields and spread to wild lands then toward residential areas north of town. Winds have been in the low teens.
