The people of Ferguson believed themselves to be above the rule of law last night, and set out to destroy the property of their neighbors.
What we saw wasn't grief. It wasn't anger. It was law-breaking thugs who got enjoyment out of burning and looting their neighbors. It was bands of mostly men hell-bent on wrecking the neighborhood. Scenes on TV showed random and intentional violence being spent on buildings, cars, and other material objects. Police were assaulted with everything from thrown batteries to gunfire. Firefighters were withdrawn from trying to fight fires because of gunfire near them. About a dozen or more building were destroyed.
Seeing how our government can't tell what is and isn't "breaking the law", it's not surprising that police weren't allowed to do their duty. Those people in Ferguson were, without a doubt, breaking the laws which are designed to protect property owners from the ravages of what we witnessed. The national guard, put on alert by Missouri's governor, were nowhere to be seen...obviously not authorized to act. The police stood by and watched fires being set in buildings and their own cars...obviously not authorized to act.
Police need to have police powers restored to them. Looters need to be told to halt, and if they don't, they need to be shot. I'm not talking shoot to kill, but rather shoot to maim, to make them stop. Arsonists need to be treated the same way. Crowds advancing threateningly on police lines need to have several of them shot. I believe things would settle down pretty quickly.
Americans have come to realize that police no longer are authorized to uphold our laws. The events in Ferguson since the shooting of Michael Brown are the latest examples of that. People form gangs of rioters, and police cannot do anything about it. I've seen a lot of emails suggesting that martial law will soon be implemented. If the events of last August and last night continue, then we can expect it someday soon! When the citizens are out of control, the military has to step in and assume authority.
We need leaders and courts who will tell the American people that lawlessness will not be tolerated, and then set examples to prove it. A police officer who yells "Halt or I'll shoot" needs to be believed by the person receiving his statement. Blatant disregard of our laws has to stop, or we will continue to degrade into a society of savages, reminiscent of the "Road Warrior" movies.
