It dawned on me today that the increased price of groceries allows our gas points to increase more rapidly, so we get more off at each fill-up.
But then, we pay more for the gas AND groceries, so we're still losing.
Ain't nobody winning these days.

Running errands today I saw 3.57, 3.65 and 3.68. Used to be all stations in a town were the same, at least in my experience.

Yes, they would all be within a couple cents. Lately it is crazy. I only report the Circle K station that is closest to the house. Any time I go out I drive past it. This morning it was $4.25. Had to go to the bank and the Circle K that is less than 2 miles from the regular station, was at $4.41. Then another station I drove past was $4.39. All the gas comes up on the same barges from the refinery on the coast and the same fuel trucks from the port in Pasco to the stations. The gas is all the same. I believe that they are using a dart board to determine the price.

Where does our gas come from?
I did some research tonight. Our gas in eastern WA comes from four refineries on the coast just south of Vancouver, BC. Most of the crude oil comes in from Alaska but around 25% comes down the Trans Mountain pipeline from Alberta. Some of it goes to a marine terminal at Burnaby, British Columbia, where it is loaded on vessels for export to Tacoma, Washington, several locations in California, and other refining centers. About 191,000 barrels daily, is diverted to a branch line known as the Puget Sound Pipeline, east of Vancouver, which delivers the fuel along a 69-mile route to four refineries at Ferndale and Anacortes, Washington.
About 19% of the crude takes the Olympic Pipeline to Portland/Vancouver for refining then a portion is barged up the Columbia to Pasco.
The Department of Ecology states that up to 70 per cent of oil imported into the state originated in Alaska. This goes to the same refineries as the pipeline crude.
About 10% of the fuel for eastern Washington comes in through the Yellowstone Pipeline from refineries around Billings MT to Spokane and Moses Lake. This fuel would be trucked around eastern WA.
We see a lot of oil tankers on the trains running through the area. The only information I could find was from 2013 that said it was coming from North Dakota and Montana. It is probably going to the refineries in Portland and Vancouver, WA. A portion probably is barged to Pasco.
Still Biden says the increase in gas prices is because of Putin.

The fuel delivery system around our country, indeed around the world, is far more complicated than most of us realize. Every turn in the "pipeline" costs a few more cents. But when enough oil isn't allowed to supply the refineries, then prices soar, i.e. what happened after biden shut down domestic oil production. And then he turns around and depletes our strategic reserves in order to make up for the decreased supply.
As for what prices are doing, I have no doubt that gouging is going on in places. I don't understand what makes up the price per gallon, but if all things were being done fairly then the price in any given town would be the same throughout. I understand added delivery costs to mountain towns and remote places. But to have such wide-ranging prices as Ilene cited is proof to me of hanky panky within the system.
